Adoption

In 1992, OS launched a scheme whereby individuals and groups could 'adopt' a trig pillar [1]. Successful applicants would then undertake minor maintenance tasks such as painting, and could submit report cards to notify changes in condition. An adoption certificate was issued. An article published in the Independent [2] in February 1993 described the response.

In its official form, the scheme was unsuccessful. Issues such as right of access, safety and continuity of support were unresolved and the OS administrative costs were a concern. The adoption scheme was eventually abandoned [3].

Unsanctioned adoption where volunteers remove graffiti, make minor repairs and paint trig pillars still continues. Sometimes an unofficial plaque is added, for example at Anderby Creek and Auchencorth Moss but often, the work is undertaken anonymously.
